iTunes and App Store Return After Brief Outage

Apple's App Store, iTunes Store and Apple TV services are back up and running, following a brief outage Thursday afternoon.

These services experienced a disruption that made the App Store, iTunes Store and some Apple TV features inaccessible to some users.

An Apple spokesperson confirmed the issue was resolved as of 4 p.m. ET but did not elaborate on the source of the outage but 9to5Mac reported it was caused by "service issues."

iTunes first began experiencing issues at 1:56 p.m ET, according to downdetector.com, which tracks service disruptions of various platforms. The outage appears to have affected users in the US and Europe.

Xiaomi's Mi Pad Is Almost a Spitting Image of the iPad Mini

If you thought Samsung was notorious for copying Apple, China's Xiaomi is in its own class. The company's Mi Pad tablet looks so much like the Apple iPad mini, it's eerie.

The company's first tablet, unveiled in Beijing on Thursday, has display specs that are identical to the iPad mini With Retina Display: a 7.9-inch screen with a 4:3 aspect ratio and 2,048 x 1,536 resolution. The proportions of the bezel look extremely similar — with thin sides and a thicker top/bottom — and Xiaomi even went to the trouble of making the Android-based UI resemble iOS 7, according to CNET.

The design resembles what you might get from a mating of the iPad mini and the iPhone 5C. The tablet is thicker and heavier than the iPad mini at 0.33 inch and 12.7 ounces, and the back is made of plastic. It also comes in multiple colors, including pinkish-red, blue, bright green yellow, gray and white. To Apple, that's a familiar palette.

The Xiaomi Mi Pad packs a quad-core Nvidia Tegra K1 processor with 2GB of RAM and runs Android 4.4.2. The rear camera is 8 megapixels while the front-facing camera is an impressive 5 megapixels. The non-removable battery is relatively large at 6,700 milliamp-hours (mAh). It'll come in 16GB and 64GB versions.

Another important way Xiaomi's tablet differs from the iPad mini is price: While Apple's high-res tablet starts at $399, the Mi Pad is just $240 (both for 16GB). That's even less than the regular ole (low-res) iPad mini, which starts at $299.

While Apple (and even Samsung) knockoffs are commonplace in China, the Mi Pad is notable since it comes from one of China's fastest-rising smartphone makers, and one that appeared to be on the road to mainstream legitimacy.

Founded in 2010, Xiaomi quickly established itself in China's crowded mobile market, recently becoming the country's third largest smartphone vendor. In 2013, the company hired Hugo Barra away from Google's Android division to be its vice president of global operations.

Siri Could Be Coming to Apple TV

"Siri, play Game of Thrones."

This could soon be a reality, according to recent reports that suggest Apple may be bringing its digital assistant to the Apple TV.

A line of code found in Apple's iOS 7.1 software development kit indicates Apple may have plans to add Siri functionality to its set-top box.

The code, which was first reported by 9to5Mac includes references to an "assistant," Apple's code name for Siri, according to 9to5, under features listed for the Apple TV.

Screen caps of the code, which is reportedly in files for both iOS 7.1 and 7.1.1, list 'assistant' as one of the properties that will be included in device family "3," which is Apple's designation for the Apple TV line.

It's not yet clear what Siri integration in Apple TV might look like or how exactly it would work, though voice controls would likely be integrated into the device's remote.

Rumors a refreshed Apple TV is in the works have been circulating for some time now. Apple CEO Tim Cook further fueled speculation earlier this year when he announced the company was refocusing the Apple TV by giving the product line its own section on Apple's website. Previously, the Apple TV was listed as a "hobby."

Adding Siri functionality may also signal attempts by Apple to make its set-top box more competitive with Amazon's recently-announced Fire TV, which already includes voice commands.

Apple Fixes Heartbleed Bug in AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule

Back in early April Apple had told its key web-based services aren't affected by the Heartbleed security vulnerability, but it forgot to mention that some of its hardware — namely, the 2013 AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule — are vulnerable.

Now, the company has released a firmware update that fixes the issue for both products.

Apple describes the bug as follows:

"An out-of-bounds read issue existed in the OpenSSL library when handling TLS heartbeat extension packets. An attacker in a privileged network position could obtain information from process memory. This issue was addressed through additional bounds checking. Only AirPort Extreme and AirPort Time Capsule base stations with 802.11ac are affected, and only if they have Back to My Mac or Send Diagnostics enabled. Other AirPort base stations are not impacted by this issue."

In short, if you have an AirPort Extreme or an AirPort Time Capsule dating from June 2013 or later, you should apply the patch as soon as possible.

Heartbleed is a widespread bug in OpenSSL that allows an attacker to retrieve bits of data from the memory of systems protected by OpenSSL, potentially allowing him to steal passwords and other sensitive information. Most major web companies have announced a fix shortly after the news of the vulnerability went public.

Tim Cook Narrates Apple Ad on Saving the Planet

It's extremely rare for an Apple CEO to narrate one of the company's commercials personally. Steve Jobs did it once for the famous "Here's to the Crazy Ones" ad as part of the company's "Think Different" campaign in 1997, but the Jobs version never made it to air.

That means Tim Cook became the first leader of the world's most valuable technology company to put his voice into an actual ad campaign on Monday, when Apple released a 90-second film called "Better" (watch above). The ad focuses on everything the Cupertino giant is doing to reduce its carbon footprint, from using less packaging to recycling its products to building data centers powered entirely by solar energy.

"To us, 'better' is a force of nature," Cook says in the ad. "Now, more than ever, we will work to leave the world better than we found it." His point is reinforced with beautiful imagery of a solar panel array, and various shots of trees interwoven with Apple products under construction.

It would be easy to dismiss the ad as greenwashing — it's a little too slick in its visuals — but it turns out Cook actually has a lot to crow about when it comes to the environment. Last month's Greenpeace report on the technology sector, "Clicking Clean" [PDF], singled out Apple for "significant improvements in their energy transparency" and called it "the most improved company" in the annual report.

Cook has publicly committed Apple to using 100% renewable energy in all of its facilities as soon as possible. More than three quarters of its buildings use renewable energy already, up from one quarter under Jobs. The company hired the former head of the EPA, Lisa Jackson, to oversee its sustainability efforts in 2013. It has also committed itself to using green materials in its computers under the EPEAT standard.

The company made a large-scale investment in a solar array outside its North Carolina data center in 2012, pressured the state utility Duke Energy to offer electricity from renewable sources to all corporate customers, and recently announced it would use geothermal power for its new Reno data center. "Apple has done the most of any data center operator to make its part of the internet green," Greenpeace spokesman and report co-author David Pomerantz said.

The CEO made his passion on the subject of climate change clear in February during the company's annual shareholder meeting.

Cook was faced with with repeated questions from a conservative think tank that is skeptical of mainstream climate science findings. The group wanted to know why he would voluntarily go further than EPA standards and whether environmentalism was good for profits. In response, Cook got briefly and uncharacteristically angry.

"When I think about making our products accessible for the people that can’t see or to help a kid with autism, I don’t think about a bloody ROI," the CEO said. "By the same token, I don’t think about helping our environment from an ROI point of view."

So there's good reason to think that Cook is as genuine as Jobs was in his ad narration; reportedly, the Apple cofounder choked up while recording the "Here's to the Crazy Ones" ad (which you can watch below). What remains to be seen is whether an ad like "Better" brings in any more customers — or whether technology users who care about the environment are all using Apple products anyway.

Of course, it's entirely possible that Cook doesn't care about getting a "bloody ROI" on this ad. We've reached out to Apple to find out more about the campaign.

Report: iWatch to Get LG-Made Flexible Display

The much-anticipated Apple iWatch may come with a flexible display manufactured by LG, a new report suggests.

According to Korean website Naver (and a translation via G for Games, LG will be the exclusive supplier for the iWatch's flexible display. This coincides with other reports that surfaced in January, indicating LG would be a major player in developing displays for the connected smartwatch.

Also in line with rumors, the sources said the iWatch will come in two sizes: 1.3 inches and 1.5 inches. We could also see the smartwatch debut with various material options, which could put some models into the thousands of dollars bracket.

LG is a longtime Apple supplier and provides many of the displays for the Cupertino giant's iPad tablets, iMac and Thunderbolt displays.

Although the launch date is still in question, September is still the month that's being tossed around.

The report also said Apple aims to sell about 9 million iWatch devices by the end of the year.

Apple CarPlay Coming to Pioneer In-Car Systems This Summer

The reach of CarPlay, Apple's in-car app system, will extend even further than before, thanks to a new arrangement with Pioneer.

Soon, when Pioneer users plug their iPhones into their vehicles, CarPlay will automatically launch and offer access to its full suite of apps.

“By providing an aftermarket option, Pioneer’s 2014 in-dash multimedia systems give many iPhone owners the ability to add CarPlay to their current vehicles,” Ted Cardenas, vice-president of marketing for Pioneer's car-electronics division, said in a statement.

The CarPlay option will be made available this summer through a firmware update to Pioneer's line of five 2014 NEX in-dash multimedia receivers.

During the initial rollout of CarPlay earlier this year, some thought that consumers would need to purchase one of the vehicles listed as part of Apple's CarPlay partner program. Pioneer's announcement means CarPlay will come to an even wider range of drivers much sooner than previously thought via this aftermarket option.

Pioneer has also launched a dedicated website for those interested in getting the CarPlay system via its 2014 NEX in-dash multimedia receivers.

According to a report last week in Japan's Nikkei, Alpine also plans to offer an aftermarket in-car system that supports CarPlay, ranging in price from $500 to $700, some time this fall.

Here's What Apple's Chromecast Killer Could Look Like

With rumors surfacing that Apple may be working on a streaming television service with Comcast, it's only natural that some observers are beginning to wonder what form Apple's smart TV will take in the future.

To that end, Germany-based Curved has come up with a very realistic-looking take on what it might look like if Apple decided to launch an answer to Google's Chromecast HDMI dongle.

The designers dubbed this concept device Apple TV Air — not the most creative moniker, but also not out of the realm of possibility, given Apple's growing obsession with the word "air" to describe its slimmed-down products.

One image (see below) shows the Apple TV Air concept device in direct comparison to the real Apple TV box and remote control. The juxtaposition illustrates just how closely the concept hews toward Apple's existing design aesthetic.

Housed in a convincing Apple-style case, the Apple TV Air comes with a slick black dongle, emblazoned with the Apple logo, along with an attractive remote control that is about the same size as the dongle.

Some might see this concept as wishful thinking, and perhaps it is. Still, the notion of dongle-based smart TV solutions seems to be catching on — as shown by a recent report that suggests an Amazon HDMI dongle is in the works.

Microsoft Launches OneNote for Mac, Makes Windows Version Free

Microsoft released a Mac version of its cloud-based note taking platform OneNote, Monday.

The company also announced it would be offering both Mac and Windows versions of the software to users for free.

Previously, the full Windows version of the app was only available to users who paid for the full Office Productivity suite of software, though mobile and web versions were already free.

"It’s designed for personal and school use, it’s totally ad-free and there’s no limit on how long you can use it because it’s not just a trial," Microsoft said in a blog post detailing the news. "Everything you create in the free PC and Mac clients are synced to OneDrive, so you can access them from your phone and tablet too."

Outlook integration, SharePoint support and other premium features will still only be available to paid subscribers.

The Mac app is the first time a native version of OneNote has been offered to Mac users, who were previously limited to the web version of the app.

Microsoft also announced it was launching a cloud API that will add support for other Microsoft apps and apps from third-party developers, including Brother, Doxie Go, Epson, Feedly, Genius Scan, IFTTT, JotNot, Livescribe, Mod Notebook, News360 and Weave.

The OneNote team will also be conducting a webinar, Twitter Q & A and a Reddit AMA later this week to answer questions from users and discuss the new features.

Apple Announces CarPlay Infotainment System

Apple has announced CarPlay, an in-car infotainment system that lets you connect your iOS device with your car.

The new system — actually a rebranding of Apple's "iOS in the Car" — will be shown at the Geneva Motor Show, held from Mar. 6 to 16, 2014.

CarPlay will let iPhone users make calls, access messages, listen to music or use Maps in their cars using Siri-based voice control, touch controls, or standard knobs, dials and buttons in the car. Third party apps such as Spotify, Beats Radio, Stitcher and iHeartRadio are also supported.

For this launch, Apple has partnered with Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo. Later on, the CarPlay system will also be embraced by an impressive roster of car manufacturers: BMW Group, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai Motor Company, Jaguar Land Rover, Kia Motors, Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan Motor Company, PSA Peugeot Citroën, Subaru, Suzuki and Toyota Motor Corp.

CarPlay will become available as an update to iOS 7 on lightning-enabled iPhones, which currently means the iPhone 5, iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C. We'll see the first cars supporting CarPlay on the road sometime in 2014.

Apple iPhone-Ready Device Is the World's Smartest Hearing Aid

However, the new smart hearing aid from Resound Linx is that rare piece of wearable tech that is not only practical, but immediately usable by anyone with a hearing impairment. Officially launched globally on Monday, the wireless Bluetooth device was developed by Denmark-based GN ReSound.

Created to work seamlessly with the iPhone and iPad, the ReSound Linx allows the wearer to adjust the sound settings from their smartphone, an important feature that allows anyone wearing a hearing aid to be less conspicuous while adjusting their device in public settings.

"What makes the hearing smarter than other hearing aids is the direct connection between Apple's devices and the hearing aid," Lasse Sorensen, GN ReSound brand management director said. "Also, the hearing aid can exchange data with the iPhone using the ReSound smart app, which gives the user new ways to personalize their hearing experience."

One example of that functionality is the device's ability to remember specific sound experience settings from a particular location by tagging its GPS location and then offering the option to use that location-specific setting whenever you return to that location.

Another way the GPS function comes in handy is as a locator. If you lose one of the devices, you can search for it using the ReSound Linx app, which raises the volume level on the app's display as you get closer to the lost device.

Sorensen gave us an "ears-on" walkthrough with the device, and it lived up to all of the company's claims. Nevertheless, laying your hands on this device won't come cheap. According to Sorensen, the general price range for advanced hearing aids is around $2,900 to $3,500, and the final price for the ReSound Linx will be about 10% higher.

The company is currently accepting inquiries via its website, but as of this writing no final price or release date had been announced.

Apple Prepping Sensors That Predict Heart Attacks, Report Says

We now know that Apple held closed-door talks with Tesla, a meeting of two innovative companies that hints at a number of possibilities. But buried in that same report from the San Francisco Chronicle is the news that Apple may also be preparing to release a heart-attack prediction device.

According to the report, Apple is developing sensor technology that would be able to predict heart attacks. The effort, led by audio expert Tomlinson Holman, the inventor of THX and 10.2 surround sound, will reportedly focus on the sound blood makes as it travels through a person's arteries.

However, in order for Apple's supposed sensor to monitor the sound of a person's blood, that device would likely have to be worn on a person's body. Therefore, this new information directly points to the continued rumors of an upcoming Apple wearable device, commonly referred to as the iWatch.

The iWatch implications of the San Francisco Chronicle report are further backed by last week's news that Apple hired medical-device expert Marcelo Malini Lamego. What's more, a report in January claimed that Apple is also working on new health-focused apps for iOS.

If this new report regarding Apple's heart sensor research pans out — barring a surprise move by the company to enter the medical scanner bed industry — Apple's rumored iWatch will turn out to be far more broadly impactful than anyone could have guessed.

Leaked Photos Show Larger, Rounded-Edged iPhone 6

Just after Apple confirmed the iPhone 5S' successful debut, rumors of the latest version of the device have begun to surface — this time with images.

In a blog post published Wednesday, blogger Sonny Dickson posted what he claims are images of the iPhone 6. Dickson wrote, "We’ve gotten our hands on some great photos of the iPhone’s rear casing in Space Grey."

The casing (picture below) has all the signature iPhone design elements, such as a camera and flash port, as well as the familiar Apple logo. But that's where the iPhone similarities end, as the larger size and rounded-edge frame shown in the photos are far more reminiscent of the iPad than any previous version of Apple's smartphone.

Earlier on Wednesday, the South China Morning Post released a report that described Apple's next iPhone in similar fashion. Citing industry insiders, the newspaper reported that the iPhone will come in two sizes: 4.7 inches and 5.5 inches, respectively, and will hit stores in September.

The SCMP also said sources claim that Apple will discontinue its cheaper iPhone 5C, but will keep the iPhone 5S in production using cheaper materials.

If that portion of the report turns out to be accurate, it would represent the first and biggest mobile-device misstep on Apple's part in the entire history of the iPhone. Pulling the iPhone 5C from the market so soon after its release would amount to Apple admitting that it made a huge mistake by rolling out the cheaper device alongside its flagship smartphone.

For its part, Apple hasn't officially announced the iPhone 6, or discussed any plans to discontinue the iPhone 5C.

For First Time Ever, 1 Billion Smartphones Shipped in One Year

For the first time ever, one billion smartphones have been shipped in one year, marking a huge milestone for mobile.

According to data from the International Data Corporation (IDC), vendors shipped more than a billion smartphones in 2013, up 38.4% from the 725.3 million devices shipped in 2012.

"It's hard to find any other industry growing at such dramatic increases — the fact that we are seeing this heavy growth shows there is still a huge demand for smartphones," Ramon T. Llamas, research manager of mobile phones at IDC, told Mashable. "Only two years ago, we had half a billion units, so it's a testament to how popular smartphones are and how competitive the market is right now."

The top driving trends in smartphones are the growth of large screen size and cost.

"The phablet market — smartphones with screens that are five inches in size of greater — is only going to get bigger," Llamas said. "At the end of the last year, about 18% of smartphones were phablets, up from 7% from the year before, and this year it could hit 25%. That reveals it's still a niche market — large screens are not for everyone — but there is clearly a market for these things."

Llamas said the smartphone industry will likely continue to grow in the next year, but will slow down in the years to follow.

"Growth will plateau at some point. Probably not this year, but in the next five or six years," he said. "We've already reached saturation in the U.S., so there will be slower growth in the future."

Samsung was the clear leader in global smartphone shipments in 2013, thanks to demand related to the Galaxy S III, S4 and Note. Although Apple experienced record shipment volume in the fourth quarter, due largely to bringing its iPhone 5S and 5C devices to new international markets, the company had the lowest year-over-year increase of all leading vendors. Huawei ranked third for the year, followed by LG and Lenovo, despite not having a presence in North America or Western Europe.

Animated iWatch Concept Is the Most Realistic You've Ever Seen

Although Apple remains tight-lipped about any plans to release a wearable device, the persistent rumors and concept mock-ups continue to stir excitement among fans and industry analysts alike.

The latest conceptual take on the rumored iWatch is a video animation that presents an extremely realistic look at how the device might work if it becomes a real product.

Created by San Francisco-based professional interface designer Todd Hamilton, this new iWatch concept fuses the sleek design of the Nike FuelBand with the minimalist interface treatments of Apple's iOS 7.

Hamilton says the initial inspiration for the concept came from a similar mock-up that cropped up late last year.

“It was an impressive concept that got a lot of people excited including myself,” Hamilton wrote in a blog post accompanying the video. “However, it had a major flaw: The orientation of the interface made it impossible to use…I wanted to retain a slim form factor like the FuelBand and incorporate familiar UI components from iOS 7."

The new concept not only makes the concept iWatch easier to use from a practical standpoint by giving the interface a vertical orientation, but also updates the operating system in order to give viewers a better vision of what the operation of the device might really look like.

While Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, wears a Nike FuelBand and has dropped hints about new product categories, for now, this is closest and most realistic take on a possible iWatch we’ve seen.

Apple's 'iOS in the Car' System Screenshots Show Up on Twitter

Apple announced iOS in the Car last year, but so far the company’s official web page for the product still sports a “coming soon” message. However, on Tuesday one developer based in Europe tweeted what appears to be an early look at Apple’s in-car system in action.

Posted by Dublin, Ireland-based Steven Troughton-Smith, the screenshots show off several images of the iOS in the Car version of Apple Maps, most likely displayed via the iOS Simulator toolkit that developers use to test apps.

Although unconfirmed by Apple, this early look at the in-car version of iOS offers users a peek at a completely different take on the company's mobile operating system, as well as an early look for for the developers planning to create apps for the new mobile environment.

Unveiled at last year’s WWDC, iOS in the Car will allow users to connect their iOS device to the car and then use the car's dashboard touchscreen or Siri Eyes Free voice interface to control a number of functions.

The system’s feature set will include the ability to get directions on Apple Maps, send text messages via iMessage, select and control music from your mobile device as well as make phone calls from the iPhone.

Automobile manufacturers mentioned as being part of the upcoming commercial launch of the system include Honda, Mercedes, Nissan, Chevy, Kia, Volvo and Acura.

Apple Prepping 12.9-Inch iPad for 2014

It’s never too late in the year for a new Apple rumor. The latest, emerging from Asia, claims that the company has a larger sized iPad in the works.

Citing a source from Apple’s Asia supply chain, Digitimes reports that the company may be preparing to release a 12.9-inch tablet sometime in October of 2014.

This latest report follows a similar rumor published in the Wall Street Journal this summer that claimed that Apple was testing a new iPad with a screen measuring “slightly less than 13-inches."

The Digitimes report also claims that Apple’s larger tablet will be manufactured by Taiwan-based PC manufacturer Quanta Computer.

In recent years, Apple rumors of varying authenticity originating from Asia supply chain sources have become commonplace. But those rumors generally hint at some new product that might mirror existing market trends, such as an iPhone with a larger screen, or an Apple-branded smart television.

History tells us that Apple generally avoids following trends, instead opting to set new ones and open up new product categories. An iPad with a nearly 13-inch screen would largely buck the current trend of smaller tablets and phablets currently dominating the global marketplace.

If that logic holds, then the notion of a 12.9-inch iPad — a tool that could be particularly useful in educational environments (an important focus for Apple) — doesn’t seem so far fetched.
